SCAN was founded in 1971 by Larry Newquist and seven others to fulfill a cultural need in Newtown and surrounding communities. SCAN has met continuously since then and now has over 300 members. While we have Newtown in our name, our members come from all over the Western Connecticut area and include artists from the Hudson Valley of New York. Our mission is art education, and each spring, in honor of our founder, SCAN provides scholarships to outstanding graduation seniors who have been accepted at an art school. SCAN is managed by a Board of Directors and five officers: president, vice-president, treasurer, recording secretary and membership secretary. At our annual meeting each May, members are given a report of the previous year's activities and vote for next year's officers. SCAN is a non-profit organization, and since we are registered as a 501 (c)(3) organization with the IRS, we are able to accept tax-deductible donations.
